Facebook is a new age addiction that, thanks to user-friendly interfaces and the spread of technology globally, has managed to work its way into the lives of grandparents and grandchildren alike. It seems like the whole world is cast under the spell of the ever intoxicating rush of information that is Facebook.

This is what can happen if you take away Facebook from the so-called “social networking addicts.”

Just for laughs ;)

Kenneth Cobonpue: Conquering the world of furniture

All-original, modern and jaw-dropping yet functional pieces, carefully crafted using local, natural and indigenous materials.

These are the trademarks of furniture virtuoso Kenneth Cobonpue, the man behind a brand known not only here in the Philippines, but also in several parts of the globe.

For one, his creations have been featured in several American films and shows, and can also be seen in the home of Hollywood’s most popular couple — Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.

Cobonpue’s furniture, all inspired by plants and other living things, serve as his attempt to put the natural environment “indoors.”

He is definitely a man worth recognizing. He has made us Filipinos proud and he will continue to do so in the years to come.

SHIFT INDEED HAPPENS.

Due to the constant development of the world we live in, we prove more and more that THE ONLY CONSTANT THING IS CHANGE.

Popular Culture Exemplars of Globalization

COCA-COLA | STARBUCKS | MCDONALD’S — EPITOME OF GLOBALIZED BRANDS

Even without reading the label, one would easily recognize a Coca-Cola bottle with its unique shape, anytime and anywhere.

Starbucks is where one can get the “perfect cup of coffee” worldwide.

Pop culture has undeniably accepted the “quick, cheap, and on-the-go” mentality brought by QSRs such as the world-famous McDonald’s.

What can I do?

I recently viewed a website (http://youthink.worldbank.org/issues/globalization) that tackled why people should care and put efforts to combat globalization. The article is a must-read!

-Learn about the world and current events.

-Volunteer. Search the UN Volunteer or Idealist websites to find out about volunteer opportunities worldwide to encourage sustainable development.

>If you live in a developed country:

Find your national volunteer service.

Or search through the UN Volunteer or Idealist websites for other options.

>If you live in a developing country:

Stay in school—study and learn.

Volunteer to help those in need.

Encourage other kids and young people to stay in school and to volunteer.

Learn how much money your government receives in development assistance and take action to ensure government funds are properly spent.

Globalization has its own pros and cons. It can be a catalyst for human progress and development. But it can also be perceived as a muddled process that signals several predicaments especially in developing countries today.

Globalization and Poverty

Poverty and Globalization

More and more people are becoming concerned about the fate of the world’s poor and they attribute their plight to globalization. Some say that globalization has weakened the position of less developed countries. This is evident especially now where the gap between the rich and poor has becoming more apparent.

Around the world, poverty has always been present, whether in rich or poor nations.

The level of inequality has constantly been increasing and people blame lack of responsibility, inefficiency of government policies, exploitation, to name a few.
